Background of the Study
The introduction of 5G networks promises to revolutionize connectivity and data transmission speeds, which can have profound implications for the way higher education institutions conduct research, teaching, and learning. Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, like many universities, is beginning to explore how 5G networks can enhance its digital infrastructure (Chukwudi & Adebayo, 2023). The faster speeds and lower latencies associated with 5G are expected to improve various educational and administrative processes, including virtual classrooms, real-time collaboration, and cloud-based applications.
In higher education, the potential of 5G technology is particularly significant due to its ability to support the increasing demand for data-heavy applications, such as video streaming, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and online examinations (Alabi et al., 2024). However, while 5G promises increased efficiency, its implementation also raises questions regarding network security, infrastructure costs, and compatibility with existing systems. This study seeks to explore the potential benefits and challenges associated with the deployment of 5G networks at Federal University, Lokoja, and the impact it could have on its academic and administrative functions.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Lokoja, is currently faced with the challenge of integrating new technologies into its existing infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing digital learning environment. While 5G networks hold significant promise, there is a lack of research on how this technology will specifically impact the university’s educational capabilities, network performance, and security.
This study will assess the potential benefits and challenges of adopting 5G networks at the university and offer insights into how these challenges can be mitigated.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the potential impact of 5G network implementation on academic performance at Federal University, Lokoja.
To assess the infrastructure requirements and challenges of deploying 5G networks in the university environment.
To investigate the security implications of adopting 5G technology in university networks.
Research Questions
What are the potential benefits of 5G network implementation on academic and administrative activities at Federal University, Lokoja?
What are the challenges involved in deploying 5G networks at the university?
How can the security risks associated with 5G networks be addressed to ensure a safe digital environment at the university?
Significance of the Study
The findings will provide Federal University, Lokoja, with a roadmap for the successful integration of 5G networks into its digital infrastructure. By addressing the benefits, challenges, and security concerns, this study will support informed decision-making on the adoption of 5G technology for enhancing the university’s academic and administrative functions.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the potential impact of 5G networks on Federal University, Lokoja, and is limited to the academic and administrative functions of the university. It does not extend to other sectors or institutions beyond the scope of this case study.
